Competitive edge from competence management to companies
In companies, competence management helps to ensure the quality of operations. This is especially important to small and medium-sized enterprises as they sell the special competence of few people. If a certain expert is not available for the organisation’s use, the deficit will critically harm the organisation’s operations at least momentarily.
It is important for every enterprise to make their competence visible and to describe their core competence. When the know-how of the organisation is well managed, developing its operations becomes easier. Technology brings possibilities to competence management and thereby competitive edge to companies.
Digital methods and tools for competence management
The competence of a company can be made visible with the help of digital methods and tools. The Tacit Knowledge in Companies project promotes the use of digital tools in corporate competence management and competence transfer. Through mobile devices and social media, the project models the competence of individuals and groups, best practices and tacit knowledge.
Mobile devices refer to all devices used by company employees when they are mobile. The best suited social media are selected for each organisation.
Competence management solution for pilot companies
Now, the project searches for pilot companies for which a model for describing and producing tacit knowledge by digital methods will be created. In the project, electronic competence management solutions are piloted with the companies. Examples of these solutions include corporate wikis and smart text messages.
When participating in the project, a company
- can utilise technology in competence management
- facilitates information transfer when employees change
- minimises risk when implementing technologies in the pilot, as there is no need to commit to a certain technology or application for a long period of time
- knows what kind of competence the company has and how the competence is maintained and developed.
The Tacit Knowledge in Companies project will pilot electronic solutions for competence management in 15 companies operating in the Hämeenlinna region in 2010 and 2011.
